Governor Kathy Hochul Meets with NYSSSWA School Social Worker
As part of Governor Hochul’s outreach to schools, she visited Washington Irving School in Tarrytown N.Y where she met with School Social Worker, Jacqueline Sanchez-Young (NYSSSWA Westchester Regional Representative) and their school psychologist, Dr. Longobucco. See Jacqueline’s report below:
The first day of school is exciting on its own, but this year was even more so! Staff and students at Washington Irving School in Tarrytown N.Y. had several special guests visit us! Governor Kathy Hochul, Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins and Westchester County Executive George Latimer stopped in to welcome our students. The school psychologist, Dr. Longobucco and myself were privileged to have a conversation with Governor Hochul and Senator Stewart Cousins about the need for more mental health support in schools for our students. We shared our thoughts about the impact of the pandemic on children’s mental health, and emphasized the challenges families face in connecting with community services due to long waiting lists, which is further compounded when a family needs bilingual support services. The Governor shared that over $100 million has been made available to school districts for mental health support. This is very timely as those of us in the trenches can attest to. I am sure that you can all agree that more help is needed! Thanks to Governor Kathy Hochul for making these funds available. She understands and is listening!
